  • Working legs without compressing my spine

For those of you that know me. You all no I have a really bad disc in my lower lumbar. I really need to focus on training my legs again but squats are just out if the question as it just loads my spine to much. I am thinking leg extension, leg curls probably one leg at a time to put less stress on my back. Calf raises. Any ideas?

Can you do leg presses? Lying on your back and having the board fully support it should allow you to do presses?? I've all but abandoned squats for just that reason...spinal compression. Plus, I seem to be able to get presses to target my quads and hamstrings (depending on foot placement) much more effectively than with traditional squats. That said, I do use front squats as my 2nd movement after presses.

Perhaps you have seen my back issues. Discectomy at the L4/L5 and know dealing with pinched nerve from herniation at the C5

I still squat but just very light.

Good idea maybe i will try one leg at a time so it isn't so much weight loaded up?

Is the disc compressed like mine? Mine is pretty close to bone on bone. Dr says it will probably fuse itself if it hasnt already.

As hard to believe leg presses are not great for lower spine injuries at all. It drives the spine into that back board and does not allow any give. This being said..yeah, I do em lol

              Jim...Lunges man....

I have some compression in the neck I just learned but the L4/L5 was a herniation pinching nerve. I will avoid a fusion at ALL costs!

Oh man...forget what I said then!! LOL. Man, I'd have never guessed that but after you explained it like that I can totally see where that would put a lot of direct pressure on the injury. I must remember we're talking about a disk injury, not back support. Thanks Link!

Yes..curls get to me if I go to heavy. The reality is (for most of us in the same perdicament) is low wait concentrate on form and ROM

Very light squats, moderate leg press, good on extensions, careful with curls. Lunges are great but I can't do them at my new gym I know, I need a new gym. That stuff I just listed is ALL I can do for my legs. I hate back problems.
